On August 12, AfghanEvac, in collaboration with Local Staff International (LSI), will convene a Global Alliance Update, a briefing for the coalition of organizations and individuals working to strengthen protection for the mission partners who serve alongside international missions while keeping the promise to finish the mission.
Five years on from Kabul, governments and partners have learned a great deal about what protecting local staff requires. The task now is to turn those lessons into standards that are in place before the next mission, not after the next crisis.
We will release The Allied Ledger, a review of how allied nations have supported wartime allies and where gaps remain. We will also introduce the Guidelines for the Rights and Protection of Local Staff in International Missions, published in March 2026 by LSI and the University of York, and the practical standards they set for future missions.
For many who served, this is personal. Service members, veterans, and officials gave their word to the people who worked beside them, and that shared commitment is a foundation on which governments and advocates can build. This is a global conversation. Afghan allies, veterans, elected officials, resettlement agencies, and press from across the coalition are invited to join.
