Finishing the Mission, Together

The moment

Five years on, the lesson is clear

Five years after Kabul, the same failure keeps repeating: nations recruit local allies for their hardest missions, then leave them exposed when the mission ends. What happened to Afghan allies was not an accident of one withdrawal. It is what happens everywhere there is no standard for protecting the people who serve.

This briefing is about changing that, before the next crisis rather than after it. AfghanEvac and Local Staff International are releasing the record and the standard together, so that the promise made to wartime allies becomes an obligation nations can be held to.

What we are releasing

The record, and the standard

The Allied Ledger

An accounting of the promise

Our record of how nations have kept, and broken, faith with their wartime allies. It puts the commitments and the failures side by side, so the pattern is impossible to ignore and the next government has no excuse not to see it.

Local Staff International Guidelines

A standard to be held to

A set of protective guidelines for the local staff who serve international missions, drawn from what these five years taught us. Not a wish list, a workable standard governments and organizations can adopt before the next withdrawal, not after.

What to expect

The agenda

The Allied Ledger

We release the accounting and walk through what it shows about promises kept and broken.

The Guidelines

We introduce the Local Staff International Guidelines and the standard they set.

Next steps

We discuss what comes next, and how governments, organizations, and advocates can act on it.
