Veterans, frontline civilians, and Americans who had nothing to do with Afghanistan, coming together to help. #AfghanEvac is about the idea of America, and about keeping the promises Americans made overseas.

Working together to save lives

Formed in August 2021 during the U.S. withdrawal from Afghanistan, #AfghanEvac is a 501(c)(3) tax-exempt charity that built and administered the mechanisms for cooperation between U.S. government agencies and the non-governmental, mostly volunteer groups working to keep America's promise to our Afghan allies. Those mechanisms ran until the current administration stopped engaging. They didn't cancel them or announce anything. They just went silent.

To be clear about our role

We did not move anyone. No nonprofit or volunteer did. Under U.S. law, only the government has the authority to bring people into a country. Anyone who says otherwise is telling an incomplete story.

What we built is the connective tissue. We keep everyone working from the same accurate, timely information: the government, the organizations helping our allies, and the allies themselves.

From the first days, we held a hard line. No one should be moved without a complete plan for their future, including durable legal status.

And we do all of it on private funding, at no cost to anyone.

Our priorities

The same three priorities, from day one

Reduce uncertainty

Give allies, volunteers, and government one accurate, current picture, so decisions get made on facts instead of rumor.

Maintain urgency

Keep the pace and the pressure up. Every day of delay is a day an ally waits in danger.

Increase throughput and processing capacity

Push the system to move more people, faster, without cutting the corners that keep it secure.

Undergirded by national security. Keeping our promise and protecting the country are the same task, not competing ones, and we have said so from the start.

How does #AfghanEvac work?

The organizations in our coalition work the full relocation and resettlement pipeline, from humanitarian support on the ground through travel and visa assistance, security vetting, and welcome. AfghanEvac's job is to keep information moving across all of it, so that allies, volunteers, and government are working from the same accurate picture.

What we are working toward

Ensure Afghan allies and the volunteer organizations helping them have clear, accurate, and timely information and access to appropriate resources.

Work with relevant stakeholders to ensure the U.S. government establishes a long-term, end-to-end plan for honoring our promise to Afghan allies.

How we work together

Trusted Partners

Groups in our coalition endeavor to be trusted partners. We will always act ethically and within the bounds of the law.

Data Sharing

Groups in our coalition share with appropriate government partners the data we have gathered pertaining to people on the ground in Afghanistan in need of assistance.

Appropriate Use of USG Assets

Groups in our coalition do not use inappropriately, or cause the appearance thereof, U.S. government equipment or assets.

Privacy Protection

Groups in our coalition do not share the inner workings of our meetings with the press or outside of the coalition workspaces.

Endstate Planning

Groups in our coalition do not send people outside of Afghanistan without a legal, informed plan in mind for their ultimate disposition.

Mutual Respect

As a largely volunteer effort, groups in our coalition engage one another and those we endeavor to help with respect and dignity. We do not tolerate harassment, bullying, or disrespectful behavior.
