AfghanEvac Privacy Policy

Effective date July 1, 2026 Last updated July 1, 2026

AfghanEvac exists to help Afghans and their allies find safety, and we understand that many of the people who come to us are in danger. Protecting your information is part of protecting you. This policy explains what we collect, why, how we use and share it, and the choices you have. We have written it in plain language on purpose.

This policy applies to afghanevac.org, the V-PRIC tool at pathways.afghanevac.org, our email updates, and our other online services that link to this policy (together, our "Services"). It does not apply to third-party websites we link to, which have their own policies.

Who we are

AfghanEvac, a 501(c)(3) nonprofit operates these Services. If you have any question about this policy or your information, contact us at contact@afghanevac.org or by mail at 401 W A St Suite 200 San Diego, CA 92101

The information we collect

Information you give us directly. This includes information you choose to share, such as your name and email address when you subscribe to our updates or contact us, the details you include when you email us or request help, and the information you provide when you make a donation. When you donate, your payment card details are collected and processed by our payment processor, not by us, and we receive only limited confirmation information such as your name, email, and the amount.

Information collected automatically. When you visit our Services, we and our service providers may automatically collect standard technical information such as your browser type, device type, general location inferred from your IP address, the pages you view, and the dates and times of your visits. We use this to keep the Services secure and to understand, in aggregate, how they are used. Details about cookies are below.

Information the V-PRIC tool collects. V-PRIC is designed to collect as little as possible, because its users are often at risk. A dedicated section below explains exactly how it works.

We do not ask for, and we ask that you do not send us, more sensitive personal information than necessary. Please do not include immigration case numbers, passport numbers, or other government identifiers in messages or in the V-PRIC tool.

How we use information

We use the information we collect to operate and improve our Services, to send you the updates you subscribe to, to respond to your messages and requests for help, to process and acknowledge donations, to understand and improve how our Services are used, to keep our Services safe and secure, to comply with the law, to do analytics on our work and population to better serve the community, and to advance AfghanEvac's mission and advocacy on behalf of Afghan allies. We do not sell your personal information, and we do not rent it.

How and when we share information

We share personal information only in these limited circumstances.

With service providers who perform contracted work on our behalf, such as website hosting, email delivery, payment processing, and analytics. They may use your information only to provide services to us.

For legal and safety reasons, when we believe in good faith that disclosure is necessary to comply with the law or valid legal process, to protect the rights, property, or safety of any person, or to protect AfghanEvac. Because many of the people we serve are vulnerable, we treat any such request seriously and disclose only what we believe is required.

With your direction or consent, for example when you ask us to connect you with a partner organization.

In an organizational change, such as a merger or reorganization, in which case we will continue to protect your information consistent with this policy.

We do not share your information with advertisers, and we do not allow third parties to use your information for their own marketing.

The third-party services we rely on

Our Services use trusted third parties, each with its own privacy practices. These currently include Squarespace for our main website, Cloudflare for hosting and security of the V-PRIC tool, Substack for our email updates, Givebutter and Stripe for donations, and Google for email and productivity suite services. The V-PRIC assistant also uses Anthropic as an artificial-intelligence provider, described below. We encourage you to review those providers' privacy policies.

Cookies and similar technologies

Our Services use cookies and similar technologies to function properly, remember your preferences, keep the Services secure, and measure usage. You can control cookies through your browser settings, though some features may not work if you disable them.

The V-PRIC tool

V-PRIC, the Visa Pathways and Relocation Information Center at pathways.afghanevac.org, is a free educational tool. It does not require an account and does not ask you to log in. Most of the tool works without collecting any personal information about you.

The one feature that records information is the Find My Pathway assistant. When you submit your first question, we record it in anonymized, aggregated form so that we can understand what users need, improve the tool, and inform our advocacy. We record only category information, specifically the topic or pathway you asked about, and if you provide it, your current immigration status, general location, preferred language, an urgency level, country of birth, and family situation, together with a general subject label derived from your question. We do not record your name, your contact information, the specific words you type, or your IP address.

To generate answers and to identify the general subject of your question, the text you enter is sent to and processed by our artificial intelligence provider, Anthropic. The text is used to produce a response and to derive the anonymous category labels described above, and it is not stored by us. Because V-PRIC serves people in sensitive situations, please never enter your full name, address, phone number, or case numbers.

We keep this anonymized category data for up to 13 months and then delete it. V-PRIC provides general educational information and does not provide legal advice. For advice about your specific situation, please consult a qualified immigration attorney or an accredited representative.

How we protect your information

We use reasonable administrative, technical, and physical safeguards designed to protect the information we hold. No method of transmission or storage is completely secure, so we cannot guarantee absolute security, but we work to minimize what we collect precisely so that there is less to protect.

How long we keep information

We keep personal information only as long as needed for the purposes described in this policy, to comply with our legal obligations, to resolve disputes, and to enforce our agreements. Anonymized V-PRIC category data is kept for up to 13 months. Newsletter information is kept until you unsubscribe.

Your choices and your rights

You can unsubscribe from our email updates at any time using the link in any message. You can ask us to access, correct, or delete personal information we hold about you by contacting us at contact@afghanevac.org, and we will respond as required by law.

Depending on where you live, you may have additional rights. If you are in the European Economic Area or the United Kingdom, you may have rights under the GDPR, including the rights to access, correct, delete, restrict, or object to our processing of your personal information, and to data portability. If you are a California resident, you may have rights under the CCPA and CPRA, including the right to know what we collect, the right to delete, and the right to opt out of the sale or sharing of personal information. We do not sell personal information. To exercise any of these rights, contact us at contact@afghanevac.org. We will not discriminate against you for exercising your rights.

International users

AfghanEvac is based in the United States, and our Services are operated in the United States. If you use our Services from outside the United States, your information will be transferred to and processed in the United States and other countries where our service providers operate, which may have data protection laws that differ from those in your country. We take steps to protect information that is transferred internationally.

A note for people in danger

If you are at risk, please protect yourself online. Use a device and connection you trust, and do not enter identifying details that are not necessary. Nothing on our Services is a secure channel for sharing sensitive personal information, and no online tool can guarantee your safety. If you are in immediate danger, contact UNHCR at unhcr.org or your nearest embassy. Our tools are meant to inform you, not to replace the judgment of a qualified attorney or the protection of the proper authorities.

Children's privacy

Our Services are intended for adults and are not directed to children under 16. We do not knowingly collect personal information from children. If you believe a child has provided us information, contact us at contact@afghanevac.org and we will take appropriate steps to delete it.

Links to other sites

Our Services link to websites and resources operated by others, including government agencies and partner organizations. We are not responsible for their privacy practices, and we encourage you to read their policies.

Changes to this policy

We may update this policy from time to time. When we make material changes, we will update the date at the top and, where appropriate, provide additional notice. Your continued use of our Services after an update means you accept the revised policy.
