Since January 2025, the United States has dramatically reversed course on its commitments to Afghan allies who stood alongside American service members, diplomats, and development professionals for more than two decades.

Processing pathways have been halted. Relocation flights have been suspended. Families have been separated. Lawful status has been questioned or revoked. In some cases, Afghan allies who followed every requirement and relied on explicit U.S. assurances have been detained, threatened with removal, or left stranded in dangerous conditions abroad.

The House Foreign Affairs Committee’s Oversight and Intelligence Subcommittee will hold a hearing titled “25 Years After September 11: Lessons Learned from the Special Inspector General for Afghanistan Reconstruction.”

The hearing is scheduled for Tuesday, May 19, 2026, at 2:00 PM ET.

Witnesses listed by the Committee are John Sopko, former Special Inspector General for Afghanistan Reconstruction, and Joseph Windrem, former Director of SIGAR’s Lessons Learned Program. Additional witnesses may soon be announced.
